Be advised: 90%
of the run course is on trails.
Packet pickup will take place on Saturday, August 16 from 12-5 pm at Walnut Creek Park (the race site) and again at the race site Sunday, August 17 from 6-7 am. You may register for the race at packet pickup on Saturday. However, please make every effort to pick up your race materials Saturday afternoon rather than race morning.
1) USA Triathlon mandates that ALL athletes must pick up their OWN packet prior to racing. Packets may not be mailed to athletes prior to the race. Packets may not be picked up by anyone other than the competing athlete. Every athlete must have a photo ID and a current USAT annual membership card or proof of a one-day license before they can be given their packet. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this. No ID, No Race. 2.) Every athlete must bring their membership card. If an athlete forgets their annual membership card, they will be given four options:
Go back and get their card
Print a temporary card from www.usatriathlon.org
Buy a one-day membership
Renew their annual membership
3) NO REFUNDS OR TRANSFERS WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE RACE. Please see rule 3.5a, b of the USAT Competitive Rule Book regarding unregistered athletes and the implications of such actions.
The fee schedule for the race is posted on the race registration site, here.
The swim will have an
in-water start next to the far left lifeguard chair outside the roped off
swim area. A final water temperature reading will be taken race morning,
but historically this race has not been wetsuit legal. You will swim a clockwise
course twice, with a short run on the sandy beach in between. Keep the swim
buoys on your right. Then exit the water and run up to the transition area
at the top of the grassy hill.
Hope this is helpful. Use in conjunction with the maps provided. You are
responsible for your own safety. Helmets are mandatory. There will be 3
aid stations on the course, each with water, Gatorade Endurance, and GU.
From the 2nd parking lot/beach parking lot, enter the trails to the left (on your left if looking at the beach). Get onto the Blue Wheel Trail (blue blazes) staying right ( the big loop). Head back over the levy and take a sharp right at Aid Station #1.
Complete the Cville Bike and Tri “Just Climb It” Trail (orange blazes), being sure to stay on the trail when it exits the trees and follows the shoulder of the road. Stay on this trail until you get to the top of a long technical climb which crests at the park entrance. Here you will be grateful to find Aid Station #2.
Cross over the road (watch for traffic) and head down on the Bike Factory trail (blue) to the right. You will then meet up with the Wilkins Way (WW) trail (red blazes). It won’t be long before the trail drops off sharply to the left for a challenging creek crossing, then goes up again to the right (a technical climb). Stay on this trail all the way around (about 3-3.5 miles).
After completing most of the WW trail and crossing over a wooden bridge, you will head left up Colleens Corners (purple blazes). Stay left on Chimney trail (yellow blazes), then right (avoid getting back on the WW red trail).
Come down Chimney Trail and make a SHARP left after a fun downhill (DONT MISS THE TURN) onto Fifth Pillar Trail (orange blazes). Stay on this, again being sure to not get on WW red trail.
Come down this trail (pass the first left) onto Lukes loop (green blazes) staying right until you get down to the lake which you should then keep on your RIGHT. Head right on the entrance trail, crossing an easy creek, to the 1st parking lot/mtn bike parking lot, where the folks at Aid Station #3 will be cheering you on. You’re on the home stretch. Cross the parking lot, getting back on the trail for a final short push through woods, down a field, and more woods before exiting on gravel next to a picnic shelter.
You will finish up at the transition area in the Beach parking lot. Hope you had a fun ride.
The run follows the beginning of the bike course for over 3 miles, including the aid station on the levy, which you will pass by twice. Exit the woods just before that steep climb to the park entrance (where the soil turns an ashy gray color). You’ll kick down the last fraction of a mile on the park’s paved entrance road to the end of the parking lot. Congratulations.
